This award winning society has seen a few changes of both the cast members and also the production team since their previous show Guys and Dolls , I am very pleased to say that in my opinion the company’s high standards in all areas have been maintained.
In this well cast production Charity who was played superbly by Rhian Clements had just the right amount of comedic naivety when trusting all the wrong men in her life ,until she encounters Oscar, played by Bernard Travers. When they get stuck in a lift !
On reading the biography’s in programme I was surprised to learn this was Rhian’s first principal role ,she is able to perform in such a confident manner .I will look forward to the quality’s she will undoubtedly bring to any suitable future roles for BMTC.
Special mention must also go Vittorio, a role perfectly played by Phil Snowe whose Italian accent never faltered, even for someone of Phil’s experience this can be hard to maintain.
With a large supporting cast and chorus members who all wore super costumes throughout I loved the directors setting of the black and white “Rich Man’s Frug “, and the choreography in the “Rhythm of Life “chorus numbers.
The orchestra were well balanced and did not overpower in any of the musical numbers as can often be the case.
Societies are only as good as their last production; BMTC should be congratulated on Sweet Charity, very well done on your hard work to all involved on this very enjoyable vibrant show and there were many positive comments overheard as the audience left the theatre.
