A great evening’s entertainment with the talented and enthusiastic young people of KYDZ Keighley Youth Theatre.  The annual concert marked 16 years since the group was established and it was an opportunity to showcase the singing and acting talents of the members and leaders.  Some of the cast were performing on stage for the first time and they were joined by several ‘alumni’ members who came back to join in some of the routines - emphasising the commitment and passion that these young people display.

The songs and sketches chosen were varied, covering a wide range of genres and were clearly favourites of the young people.  The homegrown scripts were entertaining and gave the young people the opportunity to demonstrate clear speaking voices and strong characterisation.  I particularly enjoyed the scene where the animals escaped from Chester Zoo which showed that these young people understand the importance of comic timing.  The news stories about fairy tale characters was also very funny with the added bonus of ‘Elsa’ reading weather reports and there was a clever sketch about teenage romance which was entertaining and well delivered.  Costumes, throughout the production were simple and stylised.

The young people demonstrated really strong singing voices throughout the concert and the opportunity for many of them to sing solos allowed us to see the strength of talent and confidence coming through this group.  There was a medley of numbers from the hit musical ‘Six’ as well as a song from ‘Hamilton’, which the group performed very well.

With a simple set and props moved swiftly by the cast, the performers were allowed to shine without distraction.   There was strong sound, light and special effects to enhanced the show.

As always what stands out with KYDZ is that an inclusive and friendly approach is taken in both productions and also in rehearsals.  Young people are given the opportunity to thrive and develop in a safe and nurturing environment which I am sure this is hugely appreciated by their families, as well as the very appreciative audience who saw the concert.

Congratulations to all the Production Team, performers, backstage crew and everyone front of house for giving us a super evening of celebration.
