The audience walked into Scenic Projects excellent set for Rutland Musical Theatre's challenging choice of show 'Sweeney Todd' by Stephen Sondheim'. The whole show was very effectively lit, showing great understanding of the dramatic impact with many special lighting effects. The show was well costumed in keeping with the period and Ally Ambose's atmospheric choregraphy was another highlight of the evening. Tom Johnson brought to the show some quality production moments and these were complemented by Tony Rifugiato's excellent orchestra. However the evening was somewhat spoilt for me by the inability to hear what some principals were singing about. It was quite obvious they were acting and singing their hearts out but perhaps the question of exactly where principals should wear their microphones needs to be examined to iron out the sometimes imbalance between orchestra and singer - remembering that Sondheim is a brilliant lyricist as well as a musical genius. That said, the show was very well received by an enthusiastic audience.
