It’s a very brave society which decides to do this quite unknown show. Well I can tell you South Downe Musical Society is a very brave society and this did pay off because it was a really great show with excellent performances from all the cast, chorus, and band members.
Anyone who missed this production really did make a big mistake especially some truly excellent performances from the principal characters. It is a powerful production set in the present day. It revolves around two long time pals, Davy (Alex Hillman) and Ally (Darren Alderton) and who, after a tour in Afghanistan with the British Army, return home to Edinburgh. A new relationship begins for Davy as Ally and his girlfriend Liz (Helen Stoddart) Davy’s sister try to continue theirs
Rab was played superbly by Alan Jenkins, his accent was perfect never going over the top and easily understood by the audience, a fact I have to say that was true about all the characters. Jane Pegler was equally at home playing the mother of the family, she and Alan made a very good pairing especially in the scene when he was in hospital when I am sure there were many tears in the eyes of the audience. The singing of both added to the power these two gave to the show.
Other parts were also played equally as well especially Lauren Kempton as Yvonne and Kayleigh Millen as Margaret. They all were able to add to this story in their own way to present a most enjoyable evening.
The setting of this piece was simple but very effective and credit must go to Matt Sackman (Director) for his imagination in this production well supported by Kate Walsh (Choreographer). All this matched together with many enjoyable songs written and composed by The Proclaimers makes for a great show. The chorus played its part, enhancing the storyline and joining in some of the many songs with underlying harmonies. All of this excellently supported by Alan Pring (Musical Director) and his orchestra!
Congratulations to all involved at South Downe for another most enjoyable evening.
