This year GAOS have really taken technology on stage to another level. The company’s research for all the appropriate locations and the photographic excellence of Sheila Scott has proved a phenomenal achievement. The accuracy of the accompanying artistic images on stage was something to behold. The show was a masterpiece. The set was simplistic but so effective with photo stills and movies that accompanied the action. Scene changes were slick with small sets, minimal furnishings and visual rotations. The whole cast from leads to support were very much ‘in tune ‘ with each other. The vocal harmonies achieved were a joy to the ear and the notion to sing along to the many well known melodies was evident within the audience, never mind myself. The opening with Davy, Ally and the squaddies was effective. As dark and dramatic as the conflict of war, but soon they lifted the spirits of everyone as they humorously moved into ‘I’m on My Way’, bringing the boys back home to their familiar surroundings. The montage of scenes, introduction of characters, movement and dancing and spontaneous laughter leading to the pub for a ‘guid night oot!’ was just for starters. The professionalism of this year’s cast makes it impossible to rank one star above another. Davy and Ally were perfect, with natural charisma and it was so evident and they bonded well in character and vocal ability. The match of Yvonne and Davy was also an harmonic dream, indicated in their ‘Misty Blue’ and ‘Then I met You’ duets, while both young couples proved a quartet could also win huge applause with ‘Make My Heart Fly’. The more experienced members playing Rab and Jean, I could quite easily term as the dream team for their stunning performances. Life experience, coupled with outstanding acting ability and vocal talent shining through. The drama was explosive and heartbreaking, with Jean revealing her pain in ‘Sunshine on Leith’. Stunning! With not a single weak link in a massive cast, including local youngsters and piper, it seemed like a given that the finale would raise the roof, and it did with a foot-tapping mega mix. What a brilliant night out. Superb Performance! Excellent orchestra, Thank you and Congratulations.
