The show opened with the scene depicting the duty of the soldiers in Afghanistan. This was done well and brought atmosphere to the opening of the production. Quickly following on we found ourselves in Edinburgh Station for the uplifting number I’m On My Way which was well done and started to introduce us to the home life back in Edinburgh and onto Leith. Ally, Played by Nathan Press brought excellent vocals and acting to the role and alongside Davy, played by David McMaster, who was equally as talented in his delivery of the role, and they worked well together. Liz, played by Marianne Ridland, and Yvonne, played by Louise McCahery, brought their talents to the forefront and alongside Davy and Ally the two couples told their stories through music and acting. Rab and Jean played by Chris McLaren and Emily MacGillvray were well matched and the drama and acting that they brought to the production showed the struggles and strengths of their relationship. I particularly liked the scene in the hospital where Jean reflected on her life with Rab through the iconic and well-known title song Sunshine On Leith. The set was minimal and simple and created a great dramatic moment in the production. In keeping with the film version this updated production introduces the daughter Eilidh played by Caitlin Hendry, from the affair Rab had with Margaret. It adds another layer of drama, and the role was portrayed well by Caitlin. Hazel, played by Josephine Doyle showed her support to Jean and Gemma Loftus who played the busker and wedding singer both gave strong performances. Supported by a strong ensemble who also played several principal roles the show moved along at a good pace, with the comedy working well, balanced against the more serious dramatic moments in the script. A small band worked well with this show and the balance of sound was good. The videographic backdrop complemented the set and the lighting was effective. Director Michael Doyle, Musical Director Pamela Frew, and Choreographer Grace Hepworth created a great production. This show played to sold out performances throughout the week and it was evident that the audiences thoroughly enjoyed the production. Along with the stage manager and supporting backstage crew, Sam Senior and his team ensured all scene changes transitioned smoothly. As always the front of house team were very welcoming, creating a great buzz around the theatre. Well done to everyone involved in this excellent production.
