Featuring the songs of The Proclaimers, this story of two soldier pals, Ally and Davy as they return home from service in the middle east starts very atmospherically with the opening song At War and the technical advantage of a video wall. Ally, played very naturally, by Grant Roach, has one intention, to rekindle his romance with Davy’s sister Liz. But his girlfriend, played with conviction by Elaine Scougal, has dreams of travel which don’t include him. Meantime, conversely, footloose Davey performed nicely by Gary Cavannah is introduced to an English nurse Yvonne (Claire Smith) and romance blossoms. A well matched duo, Claire is particularly charismatic. Both relationships reach crisis point after the 30th anniversary celebrations of Davey and Liz’s parents, Jean and Rab when an affair from Rob’s past comes to light. The subsequent stramash between the couple takes a dramatic turn when Rob is felled by a heart attack. Lesley Ritchie and Roger Brunton in the roles of Jean and Rab contribute well to both the humour and the pathos of their situation. All three couples are forced to re-examine their relationships and their futures. Throughout all this the principals are supported very entertainingly by a well drilled ensemble. The choreography was catchy and suited the musical numbers and the company well and the singing of the familiar and not so well known songs made very easy listening. Both comedy and drama were well directed and well rehearsed. Congratulations to the production team and cast.
