East Kilbride Village Theatre was transported to Edinburgh for EROS’s latest production of Sunshine on Leith.  The set was very cleverly used to maximise the playing area in each scene with moving scenery changing smoothly to take us through the many settings in the show.

The production team of Jon, Aileen and Jennifer pulled together a seamless show with rich characters, strong choral and punching solo vocals, and lively choreography.

For this production it was clear that the relationships between each character, whether main or minor were all strong and developed.  Our two leads Patrick Proven (Davy) and Colin Young (Ally) had the audience engaged from the start and their friendship was very believable throughout.  Using charisma to carry the story with strong acting and singing throughout the many songs and scenes they were in.  This strong relationship was continued in that of Frances McNeil’s Jean and Ian Mcaulay’s Rab.  Both jumped from comedy to softer touching moments with ease and in particular Frances’ “Sunshine on Leith” was very emotive.  Amy Campbell gave a very soft and beautiful portrayal of nurse Yvonne, and this balanced wonderfully with Kirsty Wilson’s feisty Liz.  Supported with a strong ensemble of varying characters, each scene was well executed and Vicki McPhee’s Eilidh, in particular was very moving.

The full ensemble worked together to keep the story moving, with individual characterisation brining comedy into the scenes, with the call centre and cleaners scenes standing out.

Congratulations to EROS for another great show.
