Summer Holiday – essentially a Rock’n’Roll musical containing some of Cliff Richard’s greatest hits  of the 60’s. The story revolves around four young bus mechanics planning a holiday to the continent – on a budget. Don (Colin Fawkes) has the enterprising idea to convert an old London double-decker bus into their mobile home in which to tour Europe. Don together with Steve (Fraser Jamieson), Edwin (Ben Carroll) and Cyril (Dylan Halliday) played the cool lads well, moving well and introducing several comedic moments. Soon they meet up with three young ladies Alma (Cara Sim) Angie (Suzanne Anderson) and  Mimsie (Lisa-Marie Allen) whose car has broken down, and surprise, surprise, they welcome them on board. All three girls gave strong performances both vocally and movement-wise.  No less so than when joined by runaway pop star Barbara (Rachel McDaid) now dressed as a boy. Barbara’s pushy mother Stella (Carole McGirr) and partner Jerry (Chris Tomlinson) are determined to find Barbara, and the domineering Stella makes certain that any tactic was fair game, especially when someone like the under-the-thumb Jerry was in tow.  Carole and Jerry are to be congratulated on their lively and super-enthusiastic performances.

It was a pleasure seeing so many young faces in the chorus, all exuding energy both in their singing and their first class choreography under the tutelage of Elinor Burns.

The set was minimal but effective, the bus being the major “prop” in the show.  Sound was good, especially after the first few numbers where singers voices did not quite get over the orchestra.  Lighting, too, was good, but would prefer to see cast better lit in certain areas of the stage.

Congratulations Kelty Musical, and nice to have you back in the NODA family once more!
