Dan had previously been interested in some of Tom Wells plays and decided this would be an ideal start for a one night only production of the play, with his relatively newly formed CRE8 Theatre Productions. This comedy drama had been written in 2019, a modern production it highlights the problems and “Stuff” that the young people of today have to cope with.
This small and talented cast had experience in a host of productions previously and were ably suited to these complex characters. A group of friends had organised a surprise birthday party, but it did not turn out to be quite the joyous occasion they had been hoping for. As the play had been set in a village hall it seemed appropriate that Dan had directed this performance in a village hall and in the ‘round’ without the necessity of a complex set. The concept worked well with the audience feeling intimately involved.
This is a short play and there aren’t any lead characters as all are equally involved, so I won’t go into individual cast members and give the plot away, but it covered a gamut of emotions and kept us engrossed throughout. There was such a difference between them and ably performed by all, one minute they were loud and melodramatic and the next they quietly share their secrets. Then we see the group as they bonded warmly together in a sadly significant yet poignant moment. Each individual character played their roles to the full, with total conviction and were captivating with their individual personalities shining through to keep up the interest through to the end.
Congratulations to Dan and all his cast on a very professional, enjoyable and successful performance.
