It was lovely to be asked again to review DMTC on behalf of Stewart Cameron. The Company are always up for a challenge and on the back of 2012 Jubilee Year it seemed the perfect opportunity to write and perform something new. After the Company were asked for song suggestions, the 'Creative Team' put their heads together to carefully choose the best collection of musical numbers with great public appeal to weave throughout the story of the 'Street'. Experienced director, Stewart Cameron and music man Chris Watt were perfectly assisted by two very talented ladies. With the ideas from Fay Weir and the clever script by Ann Beaton, the concept of 'Street' the musical was born. Within the plot we meet all the residents, families and friends who all have their own things going on in life...some good...some not so good. Many relationships develop and we see how the sadness of death can make its mark on a family and community. The variety of songs woven throughout was incredible. From My Fair lady, High School Musical, Toy Story, Rent, Blood Brothers, Moulin Rouge, Spamalot and Sister Act to name but a few. The Company were enthusiastic and wonderfully committed to the musical selection, superbly supported by a very talented young band of school musicians. A worthy round of applause for them too. The young lovers sung well and were so well suited and relaxed with each other. They stayed true to their feelings in the face of disdain from both her parents who projected a powerful 'What Is This Feeling' when trying to part the loving couple. There were many superb performances. Jack Hudson and Cath Ractliffe took memorable senior roles while Roy Stairmand and Lindsay Nurney were perfect for the strong opinionated parental roles. New neighbours to the street Alex Rankine and Jackie Beckett epitomised the feelings of uncertainty when they tried to address the changes they had made by moving to the street and trying to fit in. They brought laughter with their fabulous rendition of The Song That Goes Like This. Other musical highlights for me were, You Got a Friend in Me, I Know Him So Well, Tell Me It's Not True, The Letter, Come What May, and a totally tear jerking and stunning performance of Memory. A memorable night indeed. Thank you very much for your hospitality.
