What a lovely change to visit Curtain Call in a much smaller and intimate theatre where you can really get up close and personal with the actors and with such a talented line up of principals it was a real pleasure.
Expertly directed by Gail Montague, one could completely relate to each character and their individual stories which is so often overlooked in this play.
In the limelight, teacher Mavis played by Josephine Chapman gave a solid performance, which was tackled with confidence and style. She had a lovely relationship with Jennifer Hall who played pianist Mrs Fraser. Jenny always gives a brilliant portrayal and makes the most of any character no matter how small and you always remember her performance.
I was delighted to see Debbie Cornock on the cast list and as always, I wasn’t disappointed with her performance. Debbie is such a versatile actor and always graps the character to the very core. Her portrayal of interfering, busybody Vera was just outstanding.
Sylvia was played by Bethany Froud who was sassy and came with plenty of attitude as did Lorna Hunton who played Rose.
I really enjoyed Mary Bolide’s performance as Dorothy; she had the character down to a fine art with impeccable comic timing and facial expressions.
Andy was played by Barbara Tomlinson who underplayed the character beautifully. Matt O’Donnell was outrageously good as Geoffrey, making the character really come to life in the best portrayal I’ve seen. Both characters acted the storyline sympathetically with no need to push for comic value which was really refreshing and much more poignant.
Other performances of note came form Diane Wye as Maxine, Gemmer O’Donnell as Lynne and of course talented Heather Taylor as Sharon.
The whole performance moved along at a good pace with excellent choreography by uber talented Joel Montague.
Another fantastic show to add to the long list!
