Richard Harris, the prolific British screenwriter and playwright wrote the well-known situation comedy, “ Stepping Out” in 1984. His scripts are always well written and researched and this production does justice to his obvious talent.
Director, Mandy Hall has gathered an enthusiastic group of actors to play this eclectic mix of characters who were looking for an escape from their own humdrum lives. They worked well together as their stories unfolded and we were gradually drawn into their hopes and aspirations over the period of a year.
Paula Curtis and Alison Thornton choreographed the piece and with Geraldine Brown as Mavis, the tap-dancing teacher, they developed the build up to the finale of the “Charity Dance Show”. It is not easy to contrive the impression of inadequacy when the ability to perform correctly is inherent.
There were some excellent performances from the talented cast although at times a lack of projection and some unfortunate sight lines were distracting.
I particularly enjoyed Alison Thornton as Vera. Although giving the impression she was an interfering busybody she showed her vulnerability as the show progressed. She produced a very interesting interpretation. Andrew Would was very impressive in his playing of the introvert Geoffrey. He appears to have researched the role well and the audience showed their appreciation of his characterisation. Mandy Palmer as the grumpy Mrs Fraser had many of the best lines and she was a favourite of the audience. It was pleasing to see live piano playing as some previous productions I have seen have used off stage sound.
Costumes were certainly appropriate to the 1980’s period and the changing seasons. Set construction and dressing were excellent. I have rehearsed in many halls which mirrored the one on stage tonight.
The members of the production team are to be congratulated on providing a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Thank you for the very warm welcome.
