I always enjoy a visit to The Grand Theatre at Blackpool and so I was very pleased to be invited to “ Stepping Out” by Poulton Drama. Having seen a production of this play last year, in a more intimate location, I was very interested to see how it would transfer to a much bigger theatre. I very often find that a production seems to require too much scenery on stage but this was played on an open space with minimal props and worked very well. The first half was an introduction to the various characters and on the whole it was successful but unfortunately many of the cast failed to project sufficiently and some of the dialogue was missed. This was rectified in the second half and we, the audience, could enjoy the interaction of the characters, well played by all. Director, Sarah Jane Stone had an experienced cast to work with and they made the most of this very witty well, written play. It was obvious, that all on stage, were enjoying their particular roles and loved playing in this iconic Matcham theatre. There was an evident rapport between all on stage. Costumes were entirely appropriate and sensitive lighting ensured the smooth transition from one scene to the next. If one can dance already, it is no easy task to give the impression of beginners but this they did, culminating in the highlight of the evening, the dance routine performed at the finale. All danced well and looked splendid in their gold outfits. A very enjoyable night.
