Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Society – Stepping Out
Stepping Out is a comedy about a beginner’s tap dance class. The play is around thirty years old but this production came up fresh as a Daisy. The group of nine women and one man share life’s ups and downs whilst rehearsing a dance routine for a local show.. Mavis the teacher (Catherine Knight) is an ex-pro dancer trying to teach the other eight cast members how to tap dance. Mrs Fraser (Daphne Knight)is the piano player who prides herself on her pessimism and caustic remarks. The only man in the play Geoffrey (Ian Jones) is of a type who doesn’t want to be noticed and he generally isn’t. The other seven members of the dance classes brought their own particular personalities to life and the interaction between them all was in the main full of humour but there were a number of poignant moment’s along the way. The efforts of the eight dance students to learn to tap dance were hilarious but the whole Company excelled at the finale with a terrific tap routine to the wonderful melody Top Hat, White Tie and Tails. Fred Astaire would have been proud of them! The production Director, Pat Scully also designed the Set and whole performance was a joy .
