The much loved modern classic, ‘Stepping Out’ by Richard Harris was taken on by PODS, who took us back to the 1980's with this witty and uplifting comedy.

The cast were, strong containing the 9 contrasting women and one man. Andy played by  Georgia Evans was superb. She managed to show gradual confidence change’s in her character, yet suppress her timid shy persona. Rose played by Paulette Patterson was funny throughout, even when she was not the main vocal point you were drawn to her actions. This was done by her simple movements and line delivery which made this character really enjoyable. Sylvia played by Emma Dean gave a flawless performance.

The simple set was effective with the use of pictures changing and minor costume adaptations to symbolise different days and seasons. The scene changes were quick and quiet, using limited stage hands and the cast to bring on props to set the scene. However during one scene the lighting came on too early, showing one of the stage hands on set. Also in the second act, the glitter curtain was not quite set right. It gaped in the middle around the steps used for the hall scenes. Overall the lighting was good, some of the above could have been intentional but this was not made very clear.

The graduation of tap dancing skills was entertaining and choreographed very well. The monologues were very moving, however I think that the use of lighting could have been used more effectively here. When each character is doing their part the rest of the stage could be down-lit, this would emphasis the emotion.

Overall for PODS first straight play, this was very well done. The casting was well suited and the strong direction made the comedy come to life Brilliantly. Thoroughly enjoyable.
