Set in Truvy’s Beauty Salon, northwest Louisiana, Steel Magnolias was written in 1987 by Robert Harling, based on his experience with his sister's death due to diabetic complications. Thirty years later it is a play that still touches audiences with its warm characters and his portrayal of a group of strong, determined women and how they support each other through tragedy.

With no scene changes other than the passing of time and just six leading ladies in the cast, it is a daunting task undertaking this play.

Truvy who is the glue that holds them all together was portrayed by Wilma Low, a difficult role and iconised by Dolly Parton was hampered a little by first night nerves but the emotion was there.

Annelle played by Shelagh Phillips-Robertson made an admirable attempt to portray a woman who grows in confidence.

Self-assured Clairee was captured by Nicky Stewart with a strong performance stealing light from the darker side of the story.

Rhoda Burke played Ouiser with great delivery and good timing offering up the dry sense of humour of the character with ease.

Iona Stewart as Shelby added finesse and promise to the cast. Great characterisation and credibility in the portrayal of the dying young woman with eternal hope.

And M’Lynn, the doting mother of Shelby characterised by Ann Sutherland, a heartfelt performance taking us all on her journey of loss, while portraying the dignity and strength of the character.

The set was well designed and built, with some small changes in props by the cast to show the passing of time.

An emotional and joyous night at Monifieth Theatre. Thank you for the invite and warm welcome.
