Publicity for this show ‘some nudity and strong language’ in this production, which, in reality, was not that much, nothing more than you would hear on any local street, or see on television but it did help make the night I attended a sell out. Set in an old bathhouse this play tells the tale of 6 women and the day-to-day problems they had, not only in their lives but also in trying to save the bathhouse from being shut down. The set was a triumph for John Islip and his team. The single set was the main room of the bathhouse with the steam room and shower just off stage. Well put together. Claire’s production was fast moving and some of the scenes brought loud laughter from the audience. Emily Armstrong Jones shone as Josie, the tart with a heart but showed Josie’s vulnerable side as well. Debbie Loweth as Nancy and Pippa Zvinis as her friend Jane gave solid back up. Sandra Haynes as the attendant, Violet, was a great hub to the piece, and had some really good one-liners. Dave Douglas popped up occasionally as Bill, the handyman. But the two who shone for me were Denise Phillips as Mrs. Meadow and Elena Serafinas as her daughter Dawn. Claire developed these characters into a comedy duo with great effect, with Denise playing a grumpy mother and Elena as the autistic daughter.
Well done to everyone, Claire, it was a great production and another must see show from Sutton Arts.
