With Sullivan’s score, regarded by many as his best, and Gilbert’s satirical wit at its sharpest, ‘The Yeoman of the Guard’ is generally considered to be the finest of their collaborative works. To ensure the success of this production, the company enlisted the services of the very experienced duo of Alex Moores (Production Director) and Rodney Dawkins (Musical Director) who are both familiar with this opera and the company. The production was well cast with fine performances from Jim Inwood as Wilfred Shadbolt, Leigh Evans as Phoebe Meryll, Michael Hammond as Colonel Fairfax, Andy Lee as Jack Point, Joanna Hingley as Elsie Maynard, Margaret Wainwright as Dame Carruthers, Ian Ferguson as Sir Richard Cholmondeley and Ken Wainwright as Sergeant Meryll. There were also strong contributions from those in supporting roles and the very competent chorus. It was pleasing to see young people on the stage, both Elis and Bethany Evans appeared to thoroughly enjoy the experience, as I’m sure did Rosie Harvey and Emily Hales. The set was magnificent and the colourful military costumes stunning. The audience showed their appreciation enthusiastically throughout the performance and resoundingly at the finale – it was most definitely deserved.
