STAGS & HENS

Director Will Tillotson

Thank you for inviting me to review your production of "Stags and Hens". It was lovely to see such a full house at the beautiful Rosehill Theatre and thank you on behalf of Phyllis and myself for giving us such a hospitable welcome.

This is no play for anyone with a prudish demeanour, the choice of language was bluer than a summer sky, but having said that there were some brilliant performances and there wasn’t a weak link in the cast. Marc Goodwin playing Billy was outstanding, his characterisation and laid back demeanour was superb. His facial expressions and asides were extremely funny - this was an all round excellent performance. Marc was closely followed by Shaun Donald, playing the part of Robbie. As always Shaun excelled in his characterisation and comedy. Sarah Blaney played the role of Maureen, the scatty blonde. The understated way she approached the role was a lovely contrast to the rest of the overpowering personae of the other Hens. She never let her character drop, well done Sarah. To be totally honest there wasn’t a weak link in the whole cast - sadly too many to mention individually, but a massive well done to you all.

The whole play was set in the Ladies and Gents toilets of a second rate Liverpool club. The scenery was very well executed with half the set Gents and the other half Ladies, using the third wall as the mirror above the wash basin giving us some fantastic facial expressions while the characters were washing their hands and using the mirror. It was clever the way the cast used the downstage portion of the stage as the corridor outside the loos. The cross fade lighting between scenes was very good.

Director Will brought together a well balanced production bringing out the best in all the performers. Rehearsals must have been a lot of fun. CONGRATULATIONS to every single one of you.
