“There are many versions of this old story and most recently the Disney Film Beauty and the Beast has attracted audiences around the world. This story, based on the French version of 1756 “ La Belle at Le Bete has been handed down over the years and has been adapted and rewritten numerous times.
There are now Pantomime scripts available bringing the story to new audiences.
St Ambrose Players had chosen this piece by the prolific Alan P. Frayn as their annual Pantomime.
It was clear that the hours of rehearsals headed by Beverley Yates, Director, Ian Spencer, Assistant Director and Judith Oakes, Musical Director had paid off.
The pace of the production was excellent from the very lively opening “ Coming Up Roses” and kept the attention of the audience, both young and more mature, at all times. Choreography by Vikki Emberton and Ami Yates was imaginative and innovative and all in the cast were obviously enjoying themselves. It was encouraging to see many young performers gaining valuable experience as they showed confidence and enthusiasm.
Steven Barnes was very impressive in his role of Madame Fifi. I always prefer a Traditional Dame in Pantomime and he epitomized all that was required, very quickly becoming a favourite of the capacity audience.
Beth Tildesley as Ermengarde and Sarah White as Esmeralda used their experience as they played the jealous sisters bringing out all the humour with good comic timing. Lewis Hampson as Prince Danton has developed his stagecraft over recent years and gave a convincing and mature performance. His diction and vocals were first class.
Nathan Benson was outstanding in his portrayal of the arrogant, pompous
Gustave and Mat Morrell was suitably menacing as The Beast but also convinced us in his more gentle moments.
Set design and construction were, once again, of a very high standard as we have come to expect from this Society and backstage crew together with Lighting and Sound personnel were essential to the success of the Production. Costumes were excellent, with much attention to detail.
One of highlight of the evening for many, myself included, was the rendition of “If I were not here in France”. It was simply hilarious and was beautifully performed.
I have seen several productions of this piece and I do feel that either The Beast OR The Prince should take the curtain call, not both. I feel that it takes the “Magic “ away for the young ones in the audience. This of course does not happen where one person plays both roles
Overall this was another success for this talented Society.
