Spring Awakening, a rock musical mixed with contrasting tender musical numbers interspersed with full rock. It follows a group of youngsters in 19th century Germany through adolescence amidst a repressive society.

As we welcome Butter Side Up along with their chairperson Becky Cleary into the Noda family I was delighted to be made so at home when attending their recent band call. It was clear from the moment I arrived how dedicated they all were, a strong production team overseeing an excellent band call. The orchestra sounded awesome and along with the 15 strong actors, played and sang their hearts out through the whole script. Not knowing this musical at all I was engrossed in the many and varied musical numbers, 31 in total. The calibrethroughout be it solo, duet, groups and full company numbers a delight to hear.

The programme clearly states that it is risqué and not for a young audience, some of the words used could offend, but that is how it was written, written with conviction to the troubles and pressures young people went through then, and in reality, still do today.

So many theatre companies stick to the better known musicals but not Butter Side Up, striving to test the performers and audiences alike.

Theatre demands societies to be adventurous, striving for something different and in Spring Awakening, Butter Side Up do just that.

On behalf of Noda NE I wish you all success in this and future productions, and again I thank you Becky and many of your production team and actors for including me in conversation and making me very welcome
