Spotlight on Musicals. Ellesmere Port Musical Theatre Company. Gladstone Theatre. 10/5/2019.

Ellesmere Port Musical Theatre Company’s not only put the spotlight on Musicals but on the considerable talent this Society possesses. This type of production can often lack of pace required to create a success but EPMTC did not fall into this trap.

Act1 started with “Somewhere over the Rainbow” and closed with “The Time Warp” each number following another with barely a break to diminish the tempo. Act 1 followed the line of more traditional shows allowing the audience to glory in some of the greatest show tunes ever written.

I’m sure that everyone watching had their own particular favourite number (mine was Tonight from West Side Story) but all were excellently done.

Act 2 was less convential in that the chosen items came from a later era of Musicals e.g Blood Brothers, Rent, the Greatest Showman etc. Many might have found it less easy in some cases to “sing along”with these but their appeal and execution was still considerable. “Season of Love” from Rent and “All that Jazz” from Chicago were personal favourites of mine but all were fine. It was good to see that the layout in the programme featured posters from the shows to be seen in each prospective half of the show as an adjunct tto the written word.

The joining of EPMTC and FOOTLOOSE it’s youth section made for a happy blend and emphasised that the future will be secure with such a talented cadre of up and coming members.

Chloe Donley who combined the roles of Director and Adult choreographer, Liz Ledgerton Director and Choreographer of Junior Numbers and Carly Dallen Musical Director showed what a formidable team they were in bringing this eclectic mix of musical numbers to a delighted audience. Well done to all cast and crew.
