MELLOW DRAMATICS

Monty Python legend Eric Idle provides the Book and Lyrics with music by John Du Prez & Eric Idle. Spamalot is lovingly ripped off from the film Monty Python and The Holy Grail.

Jonny Salt as King Arthur, played with a regal gravitas and tongue firmly in the royal cheek. Aided and abetted by Patsy, George Attwood, who never missed a coconut beat as the oppressed servant.

Alison Broadley, aka Diva of the Parish, I mean The Lady of The Lake, excelled as the over the top love interest femme fatal siren. Her Janis Joplin/Cher/Tina Turneresque vocal dexterity had the audience in stitches.

Sir Lancelot – Joe Bromfield couldn’t stop smiling, probably inwardly quite often, especially as his alter-ego, the taunting French knight, threatening to fart in the Knights of the Round Table’s general direction, his Cleese like tirade was absolutely hilarious.

Brave Sir Robin, George Radley, luckily couldn’t see his own shadow, I’m sure he would have run from it if he could.

Jonny Moore as Sir Galahad, seduced into service by that ‘water nymph bird’, she did get everywhere to great effect. Together with Sir Bedevere, Chris Moss. The Knights loved the Laker Girls, Camelot camaraderie and the chance to dance of course.

Eric Idle made a projected appearance as God, the quest for the Holy Grail was bestowed upon the knights, whose reaction to his commands were a joy to watch.

All of the Holy Grail Python favourites were featured, the Wooden Rabbit, the shrubbery loving Knights who say Ni. Idle even managed to get ‘Life of Brian’s’ ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ in as the Act II opener.

Director Andrew Warner, gave us a real rib tickler of a show, knowing nods and chuckles around certain age groups who saw this the first time round at the cinema, plus an introduction to newer converts. Great Castle battlement set, workable at different levels which he utilized to great effect.

Musical Director – Rachael Histed, pulled the fun element in the songs, kicking and screaming from her musicians to highlight the capabilities. Singing was spot on throughout.

Slick and saucy costume enhanced choreography from Lucy Robinson, the Laker Girls teased and cajoled the Knights, with kick lines, cancans, which were all slotted in well, girls were obviously well trained in the craft of flirtation by The Lady of The Lake.

A wonderful night of reminiscence for me from my formative years, a reminder of the clever intellectuality stimulating humour of the Monty Python team.
