Wow, just wow!! What to do when you can't find the words to describe what you saw, when it's your job to find the words? Spamalot at the Academy Theatre was nothing short of genius. This show hit the spot and more. Julie Whitfield and Ian Price have created a show which was laugh out loud funny and extremely entertaining, but that's what you come to expect from a Take2 show. The direction was slick and the harmonies on point.
Fresh from their performance as Tevye and Golde, Karl Brennan and Julie Whitfield, once again team up as King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake respectively. Move over Ant and Dec, Morcombe and Wise, there's and new duo in town, Brennan and Whitfield. These two performers make the perfect on stage pair. Their chemistry is tangible for the audience to feel and see, one which professional performers could learn from. Karl is the perfect leading man in this type of show. His strong Barotone voice and comedy timing is exactly what is needed in this show. From breaking the 4th wall to riding his invisible horse, Karl was the perfect King. When ever you see Julie's name, you know your going to get a first class performance with outstanding vocals. Julie's rendition of the Divas lament was outstanding, and had me laughing all the way back home. Supporting the two leads were an excellent line up of principals. Jake Lomas as Sir Robin, was perfectly cast as the Broadway loving knight, who delivered a fabulous tap routine. Matt Warren as Sir Galahad was very funny especially in his song with the Lady of the Lake. Matt also played many other roles within the show, and all were different, which showed just how much of a versatile performer he is. Cev Barker as Patsy did a wonderful job as the coconut tapping valet to King Arthur. Once again, Cev gave a sterling performance and had the audience joining in with his rendition of Always Look On The Bright Side of Life, a lesson we should all remember during these trying times. Casey Healey played Sir Lancelot, who's performed well and was a unlikely hero to a 'damsel' in distress. Credit due to wearing a rather daring costume.
However, the night belonged to Tyler Warren as Prince Herbert. Tyler stole the show as the Prince in the tower who awaited rescue. His comedy timing was on point and he never once lost character. An exceptional performance.
Everything  about this show deserves applause. The set, costumes, principals, ensemble, the band - all were first rate and left this NODA Rep looking on the bright side of life.
