This show is a gift for any AmDram Company. It doesn't matter if lines are forgotten, props don't work, scenery falls - in short anything goes BUT this production was a hoot. Well directed by Alf Rai, choreographed by Zoe Russell all routines were well within the scope of the dancers and chorus, and with a cast, any company would happily add to their membership list.
King Arthur (John Ranwell), Lady of the Lake (on the night I attended Natasha Bennett), Sir Lancelot (Simon McGee), Sir Galahad (Chris Dowen) Patsy (James Collins) and Prince Herbert (Adam Starr) were the stars among all the other Knights, Ladies, Courtiers, Frenchmen, Showgirls, everyone giving 100% to make sure their audience was thoroughly entertained. The laughs came thick and fast, and the whole show made fun of musical theatre. Natasha Bennett undoubtedly impacted on the show in particular with her solo "Whatever Happened to my Part?" Patsy (James Collins) worked doubly hard with his coconuts (sound effect for King Arthur's horse) as the general lackey to the King.
Interesting, versatile scenery enhanced with good lighting. Lots of props. Well done to the stage crew for keeping the action flowing along. The orchestra was, at times, a bit loud but under the capable direction of Rob Murray, the singers rose above it.
There were no weak links in the casting of this show, and they had no problems at all persuading the audience to join them in singing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life."
Life outside the theatre is so full of doom and gloom at the moment that this show was the perfect tonic. SSMTC delivered all it promised. Congratulations to everyone involved in this show.
