If laughter is the best medicine then the people of Arbroath and district who attended the Musical Society's production of "Spamalot" will be the healthiest group in the country judging by the laughter heard in the Webster Theatre. From the opening when the MD shot the trumpet player up to the finale the production was a riot of fun, top quality music and well-drilled choreography. The pivotal role of King Arthur in this rip-ff of the Monty Python "Holy Grail" film was in the ever-capable hands of Brian Boardman who 'rode' and strode his way through the 'plot!' with aplomb aided by his coconut clacking squire Patsy - brilliantly played - and sung - by Mark Masson. The line-up of knights was equally well portrayed by John Hayes (Sir Lancelot and French Taunter), Sir Robin (Scott Ramsay), Sir Dennis Galahad (Josh Wright) and Sir Belvedere/Concorde (Martin Gregory). In the principal female vocal role of Lady of the Lake Collette Dear was outstanding with a beautiful voice carrying most of the melodies. She was closely followed in the vocal list of prize-winners by Tracy Gibson in the dual roles of Not Dead Fred and Minstrel. The remainder of the large cast of knights, peasants, monks and various officials of the piece, including an impressive and scantily costumed dance troupe all combined to provide an evening of hilarious, if at times risqué fun. Guess who played the important part of the peasant in the audience who found the Holy Graile! Yes, yours truly the Regional Rep!!!! I enjoyed the tin of Spam I received! Many congratulations to all concerned.
