~~This was another fine production from Erewash. Mark conveyed the atmosphere of the piece and made good use of all the facilities available at the Duchess, using the space and technical facilities very well. The music was in Dave’s capable hands, controlling the quite large band well with good interpretation and achieving a nice balance between the stage and pit. There was an excellent performance from Stephanie Ure as Nellie both vocally and dramatically, combining well with a fine Emile played by Steve Thornhill and both combined nicely with lovely performances from the children played by Sophie and William Robbins. Zak Charlesworth was in great voice as Lt Cable particularly in touching scenes with Alysha Gomes, a lovely Liat. Fiona Wright was certainly an over the top character which was just right for Bloody Mary, likewise Mark Perry was well cast as Luther, again just right. The roles of Capt. Brackett and Cmdr. Harbison were well filled with fine performances from Keith Butcher and Adrian Perkins. The chorus gave full support throughout both in sound and action and I did like the choreography which blended very well with the action on stage. The superb back projection provided an active backdrop, (spot the birds or the boats!) and it certainly added to the occasion, as did the set, costumes and lighting. Efficient stage management kept the show moving at all times. Overall this was great entertainment, enjoyed by an appreciative audience and one that should be enjoyed by many more with a near sell out audience for the rest of the run.
