This was a lively energetic show, with great music beautifully sung. The company were well served by newcomer principal Nikki McEwan as Nellie Forbush. She lit up the stage every time she appeared where every movement was studied, every note counted and every word enunciated to portray the spunkiness, attractiveness and uncertainties of a young nurse falling in love with an older man. Her opposite number, James Cassidy as Emile De Becque gave a heart-warming performance as the older, wiser but no less alluring older gentleman, bringing a depth to the role and real understanding of it. His wide ranging voice delighted and moved the audience with songs such as Some Enchanted Evening and This Nearly Was Mine. Not to be outdone, Derrick Pearce as Cable the likeable but doomed Lieutenant charmed and brought out the passionate and sensitive sides of the role singing effortlessly in Younger Than Springtime. Geraldine Chambers  as his girl Liat gave an innocence to the role. Humour came with Luther Billis played cunningly by Ronnie Honey who duped both his peers and superiors with his machinations, and with Bloody Mary played by Eileen Clifford who gave a confident performance ensuring that the ruthless side of her character was there too. The two officers, Brackett and Harbison, namely Ian James and Baz Tweed, conveyed their frustrations with the situation and Luther’s pals Stewpot and Prof also hit the mark. The numbers Nothing Like A Dame and I’m Gonna Wash That Man allowed the chorus to impress, while Honeybun and the grass skirted men brought the house down. Movement was assured, singing was controlled, production was slick and scenery and props were handled smoothly. The orchestra blended well together underpinning the show. This was a very successful and enjoyable performance.
