What a pleasure it is to be writing a critique for Great Horton again. After many months in the doldrums, following undeserved massive financial losses on their past few shows, the loyal remaining members have kept together and held singing rehearsals ‘just for fun’ and the result, with some new, enthusiastic members and friends was a very welcome and very enjoyable concert to make money for the Society towards hopefully, putting on a full scale production again in approx 18 months time.
The chorus, calling themselves The Great Horton Singers; looking resplendent in a selection of plain black outfits with matching silver scarves and, because of the time of year, the Poppy just added that touch of necessary colour; performed a first class programme of various classic songs and medleys from films ranging from modern up to date favourites to some we remember so fondly from our childhood. They were assisted by Ashley Gore singing rock numbers featured in films, very ably accompanying himself on the guitar; solos from Sarah Derrick and items performed, very capably, by Bradford Youth Players, I especially enjoyed their selection from ‘Hairspray’, completing the programme which was expertly introduced and held together by Michael Hellawell.
The ‘guest stars’ of the evening were a ‘Scratch Brass’ band made up of some 20 players from various local bands. These musicians, some from well known and established bands and some still studying at Huddersfield University met together and, after only 2 hours rehearsal, performed, most enjoyably, some 9 items which drew well deserved applause from the packed audience.
Welcome back Great Horton, it is good to see that an old well established society is prepared to fight so hard for its existence and I look forward to your next concert in June 2014..
