Due to the unforeseen closure of the Motherwell Theatre and Concert Hall, the Society found itself in the difficult position of having to secure an alternative venue to stage this production, but in true showbiz style, ‘the show must go on’ and transferred at a months’ notice to the Theatre of Hamilton College.  Although the theatre had some limitations and a minimalistic set, this did not stop the society transporting us back in time to the late 1930's in Salzberg to present the last and perhaps most treasured musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein.  Taking centre stage, Julie Brown delighted the audience in her performance as the cheerful postulate Maria who brought much joy and music to the Von Trapp household as governess to the Captain’s seven children.  Brian Toward commanded the stage as the distinguished, retired Naval Lieutenant Commander Von Trapp.  Hazel Keay brought reverence to the role of Mother Abbess, leader and superior of Nonnberg Abbey, joined by Laura Cowan, Laura Sabri, and Mia Cochrane, as Sisters Berthe, Margaretta and Sophia.  The oldest of Von Trapp’s children Lisel, was ably played by Haley Stevenson, paired with Brady McLean as delivery boy Rolf.  The other talented children included Augustus Sweeney (Friedrich) and sharing the other roles of the children were Megan Walsh and Lily Wedlock (Louisa); Alfie Campbell and Finn Morris-Ellis (Kurt); Emma Scott and Stella Sorensen (Brigitta); Amelie Livingstone and Madeleine Collum (Marta) with Lucy Norwood and Arianna Sabri (Gretl).  John McKenzie made a charming Max Detweiler with Cat Gemmell as the wealthy Baroness Schraeder. Violet Thompson and John McNally were well cast as housekeeper Frau Schmidt and Butler Franz.  Remaining principals and chorus also provided fine support throughout the show.  With all the challenges the society faced, they should be commended for their achievement.  With well-known songs, singing from all in the company and the ‘sound of music’ from the delightful tight orchestra, who could have failed to enjoy this show.  Well done to all involved.
