I always enjoy my visits to TVGS, not only for the welcome but for the fact that you know with any society who produce G&S that you’ll have good harmonies and excellent soloists. On both scores I was not to be disappointed. The church, which was ideally suited to the concert given its wonderful acoustics, was packed all seated around in cabaret style. The ladies on my table started as strangers and ended as friends as was the nature of the evening.

All songs or instrumentals throughout the evening had featured in one form or other on the ‘Silver Screen’ and we started with a Cole Porter medley which showed the choral harmonies off to perfection. This was swiftly followed by soloists (Anna Maria Jackson and Samantha Holden) doing numbers by Gershwin and Rodgers / Hart respectively with ‘Someone to Watch over Me’ and ‘Where on When’.

As mentioned choral numbers were full of harmonies and well presented with an eclectic mix including Carly Simon’s ‘Let the River Run’, Enya’s ‘May it Be’, ‘Around the World in 80 days’, ‘Moon River’, ‘Don’t Cry for me Argentina’, ‘Close every Door to Me’, ‘Bare Necessities’ and ‘Unchained Melody’

Interspersed between the choral numbers were impressive soloists including Adam Heggarty, Margaret Jones, David Carter, Alistair Bolton, Francis Cook, Mike Harbisher, Lisa Harding, Gordon Smyrell and David Beall who provided the links between numbers as well as provided a enjoyable instrumental duet on Cello with Sue Brett on Oboe

Not forgetting the contribution made by Nicola Tayler on keyboards whose superb playing complemented the choral and solo pieces.

With a lovely buffet in the interval this was an enjoyable and cultured evening from start to finish. Well done TVGS.
