This was a very strong and powerful play for the company to choose and I was delighted to be invited to watch Dennis Potter’s ‘The Son of Man’. With a simple yet highly effective set, perfectly sourced costumes for the period and a fantastic and dramatic lighting plot, I was spell-bound throughout the entire production.

The play was exceptionally well-cast and Josh Hutin, John Welch, Piers Morgan-Harvey and Alex James played the disciples Peter, Andrew, James and John brilliantly, capturing the character and essence of each individual. Jeremy Thomas gave a commanding performance as Pontius Pilate and the Commander and Captain were played well by Simon White and Alexander Sheldon respectively. Richard Fowler gave a very good and well-measured performance as Caiaphas with Dic Williams and Meic Llewellyn as his priests.

There was some very fine direction by Brian Sullivan who managed to really transport us to the far-east two thousand years ago. Of course this transportation could not have been complete without Jesus and what a first class performance we were given. I believed every single word that James Aust delivered as Jesus and really felt the sorrow, anguish, anger, despair, suffering and final resignation that this talented actor brought to the character. He really gave us both the human Jesus and the divine allowing us as an audience to journey with him through his life until his harrowing death. The end scene was perfectly directed and delivered and so stunned and awed were the audience that all left in total silence and Jesus stayed suspended on the cross.

This was a beautifully crafted piece of theatre and I applaud the entire company for a very moving and thought-provoking production.
