The room was set in cabaret style and as very full on the Wednesday evening when I attended. The show was a celebration of the works of Rogers & Hammerstein with songs from Carousel, Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, Cinderella, The King and I and South Pacific.
There were 3 acts all packed with fabulous numbers. Although most of the numbers were very well known there were some lovely unusual and brave choices such as “The Prince is Giving a Ball” and “Dites Moi” both of which were beautifully presented.
Our host for the evening was Philip Brady who did a cracking job, keeping the evening moving at a wonderful pace. He told funny stories and interesting notes on some of the numbers.
The 15 piece Orchestra including a Harpist sounded stunning under the baton of John G Barry. There was no overpowering by the Orchestra with the vocalists despite the number of musicians and as always John the MD always looks so happy when conducting.
All of the soloists were very good but the numbers which need a mention are the “Carousel Waltz” by the Orchestra which had the most gorgeous rich sound. “Do Re Mi” where all the children looked like they were having so much fun.”. Ten Minutes Ago “ with a new member to the society Philip Callaghan who had beautiful smooth vocals which blended well with Claire Nicholls.
“The Sound of Music “ by Susan Milligan sounded beautiful and gave me goosebumps, Soliloquy by Duncan Anderson was exceelent with confident vocals and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was fabulously stirring, making me cry.
Paul Hancox sounded great on all his numbers especially his duets with Susan Milligan as their voices just blend so beautifully.
The whole show was a joy to watch and listen to and the harmonies and full orchestra on the Chorus numbers was fantastic. Well done to everyone involved.
