The setting for this play is a charming house in the English countryside where Howard Holt, a writer (Jon Wray) is visited each weekend by his wife, Karen Holt (Angie Welham-Hagan) who is also his publisher. During the week he is joined by Julie, his mistress, (Jo Chadwick). As the play opens Julie and Howard are in a passionate embrace, and he is surprised to learn that she is pregnant. Julie intends to keep the baby. As he reacts to this news, Julie runs to her car to get cigarettes and is apparently run over and killed by wife Karen who is arriving unexpectedly. Karen is distraught thinking she has killed a local resident!  Thereafter follows a sequence of events. They decide to hide the body and concoct a story to explain the damage to the car.  A Police Inspector (David Vince) is called who appears to accept the story they have cooked up. Their relief however is short lived as blackmail, another murder, and questions as to the real fate of the mistress come to light. All this is deftly used by the Inspector who untangles the twisted web to bring the real murderer to justice. There is a nice cameo by a prying neighbour (Catherine Young) who is a bundle of sharp edges seeing if she can find out about everyone else’s problems. Other characters included Kenny Sayer as the car mechanic called to inspect the car. Well done to Katie Hawkes who kept tight hold of the tension.

This was a most entertaining evening, full of twists and turns, well done SODS
