This was a nicely balanced programme of music for the 60th Anniversary Concert reflecting some of the society’s past shows together with more modern items from concerts. It certainly showcased the vocal talents of the society members.
The company started the concert off with ‘Lullaby of Broadway’ and ended it with a selection from Oklahoma and both these showed off the company’s part singing. This was also demonstrated in the well controlled rendition of ‘Bethlehem’ under the ‘baton’ of Charlotte. Megan Hardy fronted the company in ‘Shadowland (The Lion King) and in Act 2 Oliver Jeavons and Katy Ball fronted ‘Look To The Rainbow (Finian’s Rainbow). Both were enjoyable numbers.
‘Well Did You Evah’ (Craig Smith & Nick Hardy) set the scene for the evening and this was followed by a well delivered performance by Vicki Hardy of ‘Papa Can You Hear Me’ from the film Yentl. This was superbly danced, interpreting the words, by Megan Hardy. Another less well known song ‘They Just Keep Moving the Line’ from the American TV programme Smash was impressively performed by Charlotte Fletcher...Millie Rogers showed what a good singing voice she has in ‘Secret Love’ as did Simon Docherty (All I Care About Is Love), Phillipa Mills (If My Friends Could See Me Now), Craig Smith (Not My Father’s Son) and Steph Coleman (Everything’s Coming Up Roses).
It was good to see some enthusiastic performances from WOS Kids in Naughty (Matilda) and Fat Sam’s Grand Slam (Bugsy Malone). The boys from the company’s next production Oliver gave us a foretaste of the show with ‘Pick a Pocket or Two’. The female ensemble brought a smile to everyone’s face with the cleverly written ‘Alto’s Lament’. There were some well presented trios by Vicki, Megan and Emily Hardy with ‘I Know It’s Today’ (Shreck), Millie Rogers, Phillipa Mills and Melissa Emery (Andrew Lloyd Webber Love Trio) and Charlotte Fletcher, Frazer Shine and Dan Hardy with the Disney Journey Trio. A popular number with the audience was Nick and Dan Hardy’s arrangement of ‘Bring Him Home’ (Les Miserables).
Lighting and sound were an asset to the evening as was the use of the back screen to display images associated with the items.
Well done to everyone involved!
