Snow White is a fairy story and not really a pantomime and does not really have a Dame as such although this script is written (and was exceptionally well performed) as a traditional pantomime. The whole production was slick, polished and professional – and we went on the opening night!
The live music was produced with two keyboards and a drummer – and the balance between performers and musicians was spot on – we heard every word – even the ‘voice over music.
It was played to some excellent back-cloths and costumes throughout were simply stunning especially the one for the finale – there was an audible gasp when the curtain went up – and Morgiana’s costumes were simply breath-taking.
The whole cast obviously took the production very seriously – and it showed – everything was well-drilled and spot-on timing wise so obviously well-rehearsed, and with a double cast of dwarves, young villagers and Snow White that must have been some rehearsal schedule - but it still looked as if everyone was thoroughly enjoying themselves – so the audience did as well!
The Dwarves were well-played by youngsters all of whom were comfortable and confident and appeared quite ‘at home’ on the stage. On a very personal note I think I would have preferred to see Morgiana played by a female – although he made a stunning female for me he was not really nasty enough and (much as I hate to say this) I think women find it easier come across as quite beautiful whilst being really very nasty.
Just a small mention of the small army of backstage staff necessary to produce a show of this calibre – especially one with so many children – the assistant director Sarah who works under the direction of an invited director, the small army of matrons and chaperones, the teccies on the sound and light and of course the crew for quick, efficient and quiet changes – all did a tremendous job and without such support there would be no show!
So my thanks to every single person connected with this superb show- enjoy the run and thank you all for your warm and friendly welcome and hospitality.
