Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Alan McHugh, local writer of Harlequin’s pantomime in latish January set as his task, the provision of a script following the traditional story but with the aim of extending the festive season a bit longer into the dark days of winter. And he did just that by giving through his skill, a script that united the production team and the young cast in a fantastic effort to please the audiences of young and old alike in the true panto tradition.
No member of the cast exceeded the age of twenty and many were much younger – one as young as nine. The title role Snow White was played charmingly by Rebecca Baillie in her twenty-third appearance for the Company and the Young Snow White by Eva Lavalette in her fourth show with Harlequin. There must be dwarfs – seven in number and these were played by James De Groote (Gallus), Olivia Overend (Glaikit), Ethan Scott (Reekie), Dev Bhatti (Couthie), Gabbie Rose (Puggle), Cameron Constable (Dreichy) and Melody Nehme (Muckle) – all good local names!
The roles of Calum and Young Calum were played by Emile Sibille and Rory Duncan with Jamie McQueen giving an assured performance as Prince Rupert. Rachel Montgomerie revelled in the role of the “baddie” Vultura, poisoning on stage her real life friend Snow White – but that was in the script, so it must have been all right! Other parts were played by Niall Hanvidge as Betty, Matthew King as Numpty and Kirsten West as Mirror.
There was a huge chorus of girls and boys, all in character and well choreographed. Fortunately, the stage at Eastwood Theatre is fairly broad and deep and so the numbers of eager participants could be accommodated. The script was full of humour and the show moved quickly and effortlessly and was a fitting conclusion to the pantomime season.
