This Pantomime was written by Stephen Duckham and brought together elements of the traditional story with alternative characters and additional content.
From the outset our attention was drawn to The Magic Mirror on the wall as the audience were advised on timings and protocol. This was a very interesting innovation and congratulations must go to the technical team. Rie Walker as The Spirit of the Mirror played her role with great comic timing and her facial expressions endeared her to the near capacity audience. Paul Armitt and his team are to be congratulated on yet another high standard of performance from all on stage. It was good to see a live band for this production. I see many shows with piped music and they lose much of the atmosphere needed. The trio of musicians this evening excelled and added just what was required.
Tom Armitt as Handy Andy built up a good rapport with the excited audience right from his first entrance. His was a great characterization and a very confident performance. Carol Buckley as Queen Malevolent was outstanding in her role. Her body language and facial expressions were very convincing and the audience, quite rightly, ‘booed’ her at every opportunity. The scene where The Queen looks into the mirror for the final time and slowly sinks out of sight was one of the highlights of the show.
The seven dwarfs worked well together as a close-knit group and were also excellent individual characters. There was another troupe of little dwarfs played by some youngsters, who no doubt, will always remember this appearance as it may well be the first time they have appeared on stage.
Senior dancers impressed with some very good routines of a very high standard.
This company always construct and dress some excellent sets and this was the case, yet again, producing just the correct atmosphere for this show. Costumes were colourful, attractive and appropriate for the story and together with very good lighting and sound they were just what were required for this particular genre.
This was another very enjoyable evening and is yet another success for this award winning society.
