The church hall was packed when my guest and I arrived to see Snow White and The Seven dwarfs - the lights went down and the audience settled. Sound was a bit hit and miss due to audience shufflings and murmurings, the lighting plot was very generic and at times very uninspired – a prime example of this was when the diamonds in the mine did their number, they were first lit in a muted light but we could see them all then it switched out to a darker light and our easy visibility went, it was a real shame.
The scenery was beautifully hand painted by Truda Sutcliffe and her team, the detail is incredible to see. This complimented the costumes all handmade by Kate Millet and her team - they all looked to fit well and the dwarfs stood out perfectly in their solid colour costumes.
Zoey Sweeney as Prince Ferdinand had a lovely presence on stage, she kept smiling when appropriate to the script and made a good connection with the audience. Cath Smart as Queen Avarice - the villain of the piece depicted her part well and elicited lots of “Boo`s” from the audience. Dorene Allport and John Smart as Justice Quill and Scribbles had some fabulous chemistry, their comedy timing at times was excellent. Graham Unsworth as Endna Bucket was superb, his character burst into the story and really brought it to life, his jokes all seemed to land nicely and he had a very good rapport with the audience. The Seven Dwarfs all came across well to the audience, there were a few prompts needed and a bit of fiddling with costumes but it did not detract from the performance – the audience loved it. I would have liked to hear a bit more projection and seen natural use of stage space from the whole cast but that is me being picky.
Well done, Diggle All Stars on your production of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. My guest and I enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
