This Company has again produced excellent family entertainment with their annual Pantomime, which brings all sections of the community together. Clearly a lot of hard work had taken place to achieve the finished show. The experienced James Miley had again taken on the mammoth task and been given a great deal of support from the Children’s Directors. The matrons and chaperones were essential, not only, as this ensured the safety of the many children in their care but who also made sure they were all dressed and ready for their many entrances. The children were enjoying every moment of their time on stage and will always remember the magic memories of taking part and improving their confidence. Michael Frayn’s script followed the traditional storyline with some modern and up to date technical scenes.
There was a great deal of Audience participation in the packed Church Hall and it is encouraging to see that Pantomime is still drawing in the crowds.
The young actors who played the Seven Dwarfs worked well together and brought out each individual character. Their comic timing and diction were excellent.
Liz Hobin as Justice Quill and Joan Miller as his sidekick Scribbles again showed their experience as they successfully bounced off each other to great effect. Josephine Turner as Queen Avarice showed her versatility moving from Principal Boy in last years’ production to the most detested today. She engendered many boos and hisses as she swept around the stage and auditorium in her dramatic costume. The Costume Department have again ensured that all on stage wore splendid outfits and the Lighting and Sound Department supplied some great effects.
It is not easy when dealing with such a large cast and ensuring that all involved get their moments on stage but I did feel that the production was a little long and some attention should be given to this aspect in the future.
James Miley and Children’s Directors Emma Lamb, Helen Thompson and Catherine Grilli along with all involved are to be congratulated in keeping this particular genre alive in my area.
