Jarrow Musical Theatre Company’s production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs delivered a delightfully fresh pantomime filled with clever twists, sharp humour, and boundless energy. Tom Whalley’s script offered plenty of opportunities for creativity, and the company seized each one with confidence, colour, and charm.
From the outset—a warm and witty voiceover that set the audience buzzing with anticipation—the production embraced the traditional elements of panto while adding inventive touches of its own. The Magic Mirror, played by Laina Anders, made a striking entrance. Her commanding stillness, crystal-clear diction, and powerful singing voice made the recurring motif Journey to the Past a beautiful and atmospheric thread running through the show. Her shimmering costume only enhanced her presence.
The ensemble set the bar high with an energetic and polished opening number, Sparkle and Shine, showcasing strong vocals and crisp choreography.
Kelsey Holder’s Snow White was every inch the modern princess: independent, spirited, and full of sass. Her comedic timing shone in the Well scene—a beautifully choreographed and hilariously chaotic number featuring Prince William (James Robson) and Muddles (Frances Wood). Kelsey’s rendition of All I Want for Christmas Is You was another highlight, delivered with warmth and vocal confidence.
Frances Wood, as Muddles, lit up the stage with infectious enthusiasm and impeccable timing. A truley brilliant performance. The trolley scene, performed alongside Grayson Wood as Nurse Nora Virus, was especially clever and clearly the result of meticulous rehearsal. Grayson, as the Dame, had a fabulous rapport with the audience and delivered one-liners with effortless comedic flair.
Jillaine Hindson gave a standout performance as Queen Secretia. Her villainous turn was both striking and memorable, particularly her powerful delivery of Rotten to the Core, enhanced by a dramatic and impressive acrobatic routine. The transformation sequence in which she outlined her wicked plans was a thrilling and effective theatrical touch.
Prince William of Wallends, played by James Robson, brought charm and sincerity to the role. For a performer stepping into the part later in the process and tackling his first lead role, his confidence grew commendably throughout the show.
The seven dwarfs—Smiley, Pop, Grouchy, Snoozy, Farty, Lurgy, and Ian—brought boundless energy and superb comedic characterisation. Zac Anders, Henry Oscar, Ava Lugsden, Millie Eaton, Charlie Sharratt, Harriet Wright and Freddie Taylor each embraced their dwarf’s personality with consistency and humour. Special mention must go to Henry Oscar for leading the three cheers for Queen Snow White with remarkable poise, and to Ava Lugsden, who maintained a perfectly grumpy expression as Grouchy throughout Mine to Five despite the lively routine happening around her.
The ensemble, featuring performers of all ages, radiated enthusiasm and helped fill the stage with excitement. Their commitment and joy were palpable from start to finish.
The creative team—Michelle Coulson, Freda Carney and Joanna Barron—delivered a well-paced, imaginative production. Choreography was varied, dynamic, and visually engaging, making excellent use of canon and contrasting dance styles. The live band enhanced the performance throughout with well-balanced musical support.
Hi-Lights’ lighting and sound design added a touch of magic, with disco lights and falling snow creating moments of genuine audience delight. Costumes and scenery were colourful, detailed, and perfectly suited to the festive spirit of the pantomime.
This production was packed with heart, humour, and originality—an ideal start to the festive season. Congratulations to the entire cast, crew, and creative team on a wonderfully entertaining show. I look forward to the next one.
