Morpeth holds a special place in my heart, being the town in which I was brought up, and in which I lived for twenty one years before moving away. King Edward VI Centre is the jewel in the Morpethian crown for theatrical groups like MPS; long may this continue… it is a fine facility.
Chairman Bruce Ennion met me and brought me up to speed on this very talented group’s progress since the covid break, and how good to hear about their development and progressive attitude for the future.
When the action began, it was obvious that both Lee Brannigan-Howes’ script and directional style had a definite, positive effect on the quality of the production. He also took the part of the Magic Mirror at short notice; the original part-holder Laura Street having had an unfortunate accident, breaking both of her arms. We wish her a speedy recovery.
There were some stellar performances in this well-loved tale... the love interest nicely played and sung by Eva Dunphy in the title role and Jane Pederson as Prince Peter (of Pegswood). George Humphries was a very funny Muddles and he was very ably and comedically supported by Alan Bullock as Nurse Dolly. Suzi Hutton was a very refined and nasty Queen Hilda ably supported by her henchman Duncan Hutton. Flip and Flop were a funny comedy duo; ably and expertly played by Maddie Bullock and Anya Peters. I particularly enjoyed their parcel delivery scene and its toungue-twisting routine. The seven little people – Bossy, Flossy, Giggles, Moody, Tiddles, Windy and Yawny were superbly played by Eilidh Evans, Jake Humphries, Anya Dunphy, Lydia Watson, Martha Gammer, Finlay Gammer and Gracie Michelson. Not forgetting Lee’s sparkling portrayal of the Mirror. Congratulations to all… in my opinion, there were no 'weak links'.
A large and colourful chorus and dancers completed the cast with some fabulous singing and movement. A pleasure to watch and listen to.
The colourful backcloths and stage props were very well managed by Beth Marriott and the crew; seamlessly and effortlessly done. Furthermore, a big shout-out to the technical team from King Edwards for superb effects which contributed to the success of this show. Colourful and well thought out costumes were also a large contributory factor; so well done Pat Ennion, Lucy Gammer, Dress Circle and the whole team for their efforts.
Last, but certainly not least, a huge handshake to Lee, Dawn Wolfington, Sonia Charters and Jonathan Hughes on the production team for a superb family panto. I enjoyed every minute (apart from the soaking in the first act !).
Thanks for the invitation and hospitality. I look forward to returning in 2024 – Oh yes I do !…..
