Snoopy The Musical is like no other show. There is little sense of a storyline, instead the musical reflects the comic strip from which it comes – presenting a series of short comedic and touching episodes linked by the characters, rather than an obvious plot line.
From the very beginning this production got off to a lively start with an enthusiastic company in fine voice and moving well which continued throughout the whole performance. Snoopy was played very effectively with great characterisation by Garry Dring and his faithful friend Woodstock, Louis Coates attempts to get something right. Charlie Brown and his sister Sally portrayed by George Maenami and Gina McBride, worked well together singing and moving well. The rest of the gang siblings Linus, Richard Bracknall and Lucy, Helen Brooks together with Marcia and Frieda, both played by Marie Turnbull due to the illness of Karen Coates and Shroeder, Thomas Allen all gave great interpretation to their characters. The highlight of the show for me was tomboy Peppermint Patty portrayed excellently by Alice Maenami. She sang and danced effortlessly throughout particularly in ‘I Know Now’ and ‘Poor Sweet Baby’.
As usual with North Ormesby Minstrels all members of the company play their part to make an enjoyable evening. The transformation of this hall into a platform for musical theatre is a credit to all concerned. The music was in the capable hands of Matthew Allen and his small band, the dancing under the direction of the talented Alice Maenami and the whole production pulled together by Jill Stephenson. Simple but effective colourful costumes and set was the final part that made this such a memorable and enjoyable piece of theatre. Well done to everybody.
