Sleeping Beautiy : A pantomime, by Limelight Scripts, is about King Rolo and Queen Beatrice trying to shield their lovely daughter (Princess Nightingale) from the wicked Zendora. But of course there is much more to it than that! The action takes us from the village of Tapioca, to the Royal Palace to a distant hill for a hilarious sketch involving an echo! The audience were treated to songs and dances, struggles, fights, deception and audience interaction, all with a happy ending and a royal wedding.
The experience of the Director (Lesley Nicholls) was evident throughout the production. Melisa Montagnon was superbly evil as Zendora with lovely facial expressions and body language. Jasmine Price gave a charming performance as Fairy Light. There was delightful partnering of Claire Lymer and John Willcocks as Sage and Onion: their breezy presence moved the action along nicely. Tim Carey-Yard’s natural exuberance shone through and clearly relished his role of Dame Thyme, especially when he belted out “Hey Big Spender”. Likewise Andy Ball was on great form as King Rolo with able support from Joan Warren as Queen Beatrice; their duet “You’re the one that I want” being a favourite of mine (and the audience!) Special mention also to Mark Nicholls as Shirley the Valet, quietly stealing every scene he was in.
There were lots of comic moments, general slapstick, banter and some lively dance sequences with well thought out choreography from Michele Gulrajani. The first class musical accompaniment was provided by Michael Wooldridge and Chaz McLeod. With great support from the ballerinas, dancers, servants and villagers, this was everything a panto should be, energetic, full of corny jokes, and a lot of fun. Well done to all for their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm.
