I was delighted to accept the invitation to the fictional Kingdom of Marymuir to see this production of this perennial favourite. Director Graeme Baird packed the show with lots of local references and music varying from the traditional opening “On A Wonderful Day Like Today” to take offs of modern musical numbers like “Nanny’s Such A Big Girl Now” to the less well known “Who Will Love Me As I Am?” delightfully sung by Beauty (Catherine Wales). Comedy was safely in the hands of Brian Mathieson as the larger than life Nanny Cranny and her sidekick Pickles played by Caitlyn Boyd. Charlotte Payne was a truly evil and boo-able Carabosse but her magic was no match for that of Kerry Guthrie’s Lilac Fairy. Ross Robertson as Beauty’s saviour and love interest Prince Michael was a strong character and I enjoyed his rendition of Sondheim’s “Not While I’m Around”. Strong support was given by Chris Taylor as the bumbling King and by Ali Niven as his Queen. The young chorus were well drilled and threw themselves enthusiastically into all the chorus numbers. Well done everyone for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
