SLEEPING BEAUTY

The announcement of a new Royal birth causes much excitement.

Director Jason Greenwood weaved his spell with the talented CATS cast bringing his original script of Sleeping Beauty to Bishop Rawle Primary School Hall.

Fairy Froghall - Rob Adamson, aided and abetted by Fairies Upper and Lower Tean, Hazel Evans and Eden Leigh, had their work cut out but ultimately tried their collective fairy best as they traded magical blows with Fairy turned bad ’un, Nighty Night - Samantha Hughes-Johnson, ooh she’s a right nasty piece of work, delighting in taking her boo’s and just being plain nasty.

Bumbles - Fynnegan Bell, the loveable fool of the tale, be-plagued by ever funnier prank phone calls throughout the show, despite his Bumbling’s, he sort of made sense of the shows wacky proceedings, which is a sentence I never thought I’d write.

King Rollo – Tim Ray and Queen Latifa – Tracey Callan-Johnsons, provided some funny visual prop  gags, diminutive Rollo the butt of Nanny Odd’s frequent heightest humour. Nice vocals to from Tracey. There were some funny inter-pantomime character gags as well which added to proceedings.

Dame Nanny Odd - Dan Ede Smith, she played the audience like an old fiddle, gawdy, flamboyant, completely over the top, just what you want from a dame. Spot on Dan.

We have some lovely bits of choreography throughout from the Vivienne Shelley, with her young dancers performing in various groups, nice couple of ballet sections.

Act II opened to the strains of Canned Heat’s Going Up Country with animal costumed dancers. This leads Princes Aurora – Emma Critchlow, to discover a spinning wheel in a forgotten locked tower. Some really well-chosen songs, Prince’s 1999, a panto first for us, albeit the second Prince song in a panto in two nights. I don’t know, you wait for one …..

Other numbers included Holding Out for a Hero,  Don’t Stop Me Now. Great set, costumes likewise, the supporting cast.

Scary forest scene, always a winner. I loved the background scenery images, particularly the bear with a toilet roll. This scene did fall into complete and utter mayhem as the twelve days of Christmas reared it’s crazy head again, this scene also introduces us to Dave the Dinosaur, Isaac Ellerton, whose bouncing animated antics were hilarious.

We also get to meet Prince “Handsome” Borealis - Samuel Askey, acting his lips off, puckering up for dear life throughout at the prospect of saving Aurora with “love’s (very much deliberated and debated, is it True or is it First) kiss”

Sleeping Beauty a joy to behold. Oh Yes it Was!
