This updated version of the ever-popular pantomime written by Julie Petrucci and Chris Shin had a cast of what appeared to be dozens of junior and senior chorus members, all colourfully dressed and exceptionally well drilled in both movement and song. It also introduced references to mobile phones and other modern adaptations including an MI5 agent! It was obvious from the adult cast that this was a theatre group production as their experience shone through at all times. This was particularly obvious in the case of King Basil and Queen Beryl, confidently played by Andy Gilbride and Susan Crabb. The title role of Princess Aurora was delightfully played by Emily Hunter and her Prince Valiant by Harry Cheape – a romantic duet from them would have been nice! The continuity of the piece was ably carried out by Mike Burns in the role of Victor, doubling as narrator. The traditional wicked witch Zelda was powerfully performed by Kim Samson who fully deserved the boos of the youngsters in the audience while Nikki Doig ably let the team of fairies in the role of Amethyst. Comedy was in the capable hands of George Doherty in the necessary role of the dame, Dotty Dooright, ably assisted by MI5 Agent Jester (Paul Strachan). Other minor principals were well in control of their characters and a highlight was the performance of the troup of five beautiful ballet dancers. Add to that beautiful colourful costumes and impressive scenery and a very enthusiastic chorus of both junior and seniors performers and the result was a most enjoyable evening of Christmas entertainment.
