With the backdrop of the story of Henry Vlll and his six wives we experienced the framing of the storytelling through this musical comedy presented in the form of a singing competition. Each of the wives portraying their tragic lives, along with some acerbic banter entertained us through their journey. Finding six young females who each could hold strong characters throughout the show could be difficult. However, the Johnstone six really displayed their talents through their vocal strength, acting and dance abilities in the portrayal of each of the roles. A lot of hard work had obviously gone into the rehearsals. From big energetic rock type songs to strong ballads, each one displayed an individual high level of performance telling their own story in the six individual powerful numbers. They also worked well as a team with backing vocals and dance. I’d like to pay credit collectively to the teen team of six as they took us through their own tales of “divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived”. At the performance I attended, the role of Anne Boleyn was played by Katie Wood (swing) who had been brought in at the last minute. Her performance standard was equally as high in all aspects of singing, acting and dance. The hard work of the production team cannot go without recognition. Cat Clark, musical director ensured the songs were well executed, with clear diction and great storytelling through song. Music backing tracks were good and the balance of tracks and vocals was well mixed. Choreography by Amy Carrigan was slick and precise, and the standard of dancing was high. The overall direction of the show was well done and Craig Inglis-McDonald’s vision through the static set of regal chairs and a small video wall suited this production well. All other aspects of the production including lighting, sound, costumes and hair and make-up added to the overall success of this show.
It was a pleasure to see the show and I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of it. Well done to all involved.
At the performance I atended I saw the original line-up of Amelia, Olivia, Lucy, Grace, Nieve and Emma - each one brining the individual characters to life through their excellent sining and acting that showcased the individual stories of the 6 wives whilst combining well to support each other. They were all assured in their performances and the vocals in particluar were very strong tackling with ease some extremley tricky numbers. Well done to all for an excellent show.
