As I left Panto season behind me and moved into the time of the year when Dramas and Musicals are the order of the day, it was such a pleasure to see my first musical and what a good one it was. This student led production of Six – Teen Edition performed at Victory Academy was, in the words of Craig Greville Hallwood, FAB-U-LOUS. From the moment the show began to its conclusion, sixty minutes later, the energy, vocals and drama were of an exceptionally high standard. The student directors had worked with their own Queen, and this gave us several different interpretations, as each royal relayed their life story to the audience.
The simple set was ideal, as the Queens only sat down whilst another sang, imaginative lighting effects were all that was required.
It would be wrong to separate the Queens, as they are the story, and any weaknesses would reflect on them all but there were none. These six young ladies made us laugh, made us cry and some just had a good time. Also, involved with them in every number were the ten Ladies in Waiting, what a great back-up crew. These singing and dancing young ladies, enhanced everything the Queens did.
In the words from one of the songs and a saying that we all learnt at school, here are the Queens: -
DIVORCED – Catherine of Aragon – Cali Chamberlain
BEHEADED – Anne Boleyn – Kiki Fairhead
DIED – Jane Seymour – Amber Atkins
DIVORCED – Anne of Cleves – Evie Dixon
BEHEADED – Katherine Howard – Jennifer Lopes
SURVIVED – Catherine Parr – Sophie Wild
These were six great performances. Backed up so strongly by Harriet Cameron, Evie Fullerton, Emma Howard, Ellie Howes, Ella Hurren, Tallis Mitchell, Jess Olley, Libby Simpson, Lucy Skelton, Jessie Willetts.
The production team of Directors, Evie White, Mia Youngs-Lloyd, Jessie Willetts and Libby Simpson, Choreographer, Cali Chamberlain and with all the backstage crew, should be very proud of what they have achieved with this production.
